General FAQs
A personalised set of terms and conditions (an Acceptance of Commission document) will be sent to you before we start work and before you send a deposit payment.
This page aims to answer some of the more common questions and covers many of the areas also covered by the Acceptance of Commission document.
If you would like to see a copy of the full terms and conditions before deciding whether to commission me then please visit this page.
As well as uploading it to your ebook and print companies, you can use the cover to promote and market your book. For example, you can share it on social media or add it to your website.
I am more than happy for you to use the cover design to promote your book as much as you like. After all, I want your book to be a success too.
Credit and a link back to BookCoversByJon.com, www.jonstubbington.com, or to my social media accounts is always appreciated, but I do not insist on it.
No. If you have purchased an ebook cover only, you are not allowed to turn that into a printed cover. You have only purchased a licence to use the design for an ebook.
If you would like to use the cover on a paperback as well, that’s no problem. Let me know and I will arrange for your licence to be extended for paperback use and I will send you an invoice for the additional payment required. I will also ask you to provide the extra information I need to prepare your paperback cover.
Absolutely. If you have purchased an ebook cover, you can come back to me at any point and ask for it to be upgraded to a paperback cover. There will be an additional fee for the work and I will advise you of that cost before we start work on your paperback cover.
Yes. These are available for an additional fee.
The current prices for adding other formats are shown here.
No. The licence I provide allows you to use the cover on your book and for promotion, but it does not allow you to alter the image yourself.
If you would like changes made to the artwork this may be possible. Please let me know what you would like and we can go from there.
No. You can produce materials to help market your book that reuse part or all of the design, such as bookmarks, but you cannot sell these. They can be offered for free.
If you would like to make items to sell, such as prints of the cover artwork, please let me know and we can go from there. There are different options available to you depending on whether you have chosen a custom illustrated design or a custom stock-based design and I will advise you of the different options at that time.
Definitely. Let me know what you need and I can provide an appropriate quote for you. It is often possible to arrange a discount for a series of covers.
Please be aware that, if you have chosen a stock image-based cover, there may be some restrictions on the number of stock images that are available featuring your chosen model(s). I will discuss this with you if this is something that affects your series.
I retain the right to use the cover as an example of my work. For example, it may appear on my social media accounts or in a gallery of covers on this website.
If you have a release date for your book and you do not want me to share your finished cover publicly before that date that’s not a problem. Just drop me an email to let me know.
A cover credit is most often added on the book’s information/copyright page. Something like this would be fantastic:
“Cover design by Jon Stubbington (BookCoversByJon.com)”
As standard, my paperback covers also come with a cover credit on the back cover.
Yes. If you would like to order a cover for a book you’re still working on, that’s no problem.
We can develop the design and then add your title once it has been chosen.
Possibly. It will depend on which print company you are using and where you want your book to be stocked. I will ask for this information once I understand which print company you are using.
If you have any questions about ISBNs or barcodes then please ask and I will be happy to help explain further.
The designs have not been created using a generative AI art programme. A custom illustrated cover design definitely does not contain any generative AI art.
My custom stock-based cover designs, to the best of my knowledge, do not contain any generative AI art elements. While every effort has been made to source stock images that have not been created using a generative AI art programme, these are not always labelled as such on stock image sites. As such, I cannot guarantee that the design does not include elements created using a generative AI art programme.
As the creator of the cover design, I automatically hold the copyright for the overall design. When you commission a cover from me, I grant you a licence to use that design for your book.
The paperwork I send you will confirm which licences you have purchased (for example, it specifies if you have purchased an ebook licence only, or an ebook and a paperback). If you have any questions about any of the terms, or about the licences you have purchased, please don’t hesitate to let me know at jon@jonstubbington.com.
Where a cover design uses stock photos or images then the original photographer/designer holds the copyright to that individual photo or image. I will have purchased a licence to use the image within the design I have created and you are granted a sublicence to use that image.
Individual elements of your cover design must not be extracted, reproduced, or used in any other way. They can only be used as part of the overall cover design.
Custom cover FAQs
I have different prices for illustrated and stock-based cover designs.
Please see this page for the latest prices for different book cover packages.
Sometimes a cover requires more work or extra files to be created and there can be an additional charge for this. Don’t worry – all costs will be discussed before you commit to using my services so there will be no hidden surprises.
I am based in the UK but I work with clients all around the world. As such, I show prices in both US dollars and British pounds. This is to allow customers to be able to easily compare the cost of my services with others on the market. I also accept payments in CAD, AUD, and NZD. Please ask me for a quote if you would like to pay in one of these currencies.
The cost includes the full process of designing your cover, including any stock assets needed for the design and selecting the fonts you wish to use. At the end of the project you will receive an upload-ready ebook cover file.
If you have selected a paperback licence as well as an ebook, you will also receive one upload-ready full-wrap paperback file.
The cost also includes a free 3D promotional image of your cover and a social media-friendly announcement graphic.
If you require additional files (for example, if you are printing a paperback with KDP and IngramSpark then you will need two paperback cover files) or if you would like an audiobook or hardcover, then these are available for an additional fee.
The current prices for adding other formats or extra files are shown here.
Each cover is created specifically for your book. We will work together to understand what your book is about, what genre you are targeting, and what you want to see on your cover.
I will then create your cover, either as an illustrated design or using photo manipulation and illustration.
A custom cover is typically completed within 4-6 weeks of starting work.
This timescale is affected by the complexity of your design, how many rounds of revisions we go through, and the speed of reviewing the different stages (among other things).
I will ask you about your publishing timescales at the beginning of the project and I will work with you to meet those timescales wherever possible.
Yes. While I hope we could always resolve any issues you were experiencing with a cover project, you are free to cancel at any time.
I ask for a 50% deposit at the start of the project with the remaining 50% payable on approval of the final design. If you cancel before approving the final designs then I charge a cancellation fee of 50% of the project value. In other words, you are not required to pay the final 50% and your 50% deposit will not be refunded.
I offer both fully illustrated custom covers and covers that include stock photographs. A fully illustrated cover is more expensive than a photo-based cover.
If you choose a stock image-based cover then please remember that those images could be used on other book covers (neither you nor I will have exclusive use of that individual image).
There are no download limits for fully illustrated covers.
Covers that include stock images are subject to a download limit. There is no limit on the number of ebook downloads, but you can only produce a maximum of 200,000 print copies.
Should this become an issue then let me know and we can look at purchasing an extended licence from the stock image provider, which allows for more printed copies to be produced.
The paperwork I send you at the beginning of the project will detail any download limits (if they apply).
Premade cover FAQs
The base cost includes adapting the cover design to include your author name, your title, and your subtitle/series name if appropriate. You will receive an upload-ready ebook cover file.
The cost also includes a free 3D promotional image of your cover and a social media-friendly announcement graphic.
If you have selected the paperback add-on, you will also receive one upload-ready full-wrap paperback file.
Similarly, if you select an audiobook or a hardcover add-on, you will also receive one upload-ready file for each of those formats.
The terms can be read online here. You will need to confirm you accept these terms before you can place an order.
A personalised set of these terms will be emailed to you after you have placed your order.
Yes. You can cancel your order at any time up to 14 days after you have received your final cover files.
If you cancel your order, you will not be able to use the cover design and I will put the design up for sale again.
You can cancel by contacting me at jon@jonstubbington.com or by filling out and sending me the Model Cancellation Form found at the bottom of the terms and conditions.
Assuming I have all the information (eg you have let me know your title and author name) then I will update the front cover design and send you a copy to review within three working days. This will be sent by email to the address you used when you purchased the cover.
If you have ordered a paperback cover file or any add-ons then I will contact you to gather any additional information needed and to agree an appropriate delivery date for those items. This will depend on factors such as when you will have the required information needed to complete your paperback file.
In order to produce the full-wrap paperback file at the correct size, I will need several pieces of information from you. These include the final page count, your choice of paper stock, and the trim size for your book.
If you have ordered a paperback cover, I will email you with a list of the information I need.
Not at all! You can purchase your cover now and I will reserve it for when you have finished your book and are ready for your final cover files.
You will need separate cover files for each company. Please select the Additional Paperback File option to order a second paperback cover file.
Yes. Please email me at jon@jonstubbington.com and let me know what you would like to add to your order.
I will send you an invoice for any additional items.
There is no limit on the number of ebook downloads, but you can only produce a maximum of 200,000 print copies (in total, across all printed formats).
Should this become an issue then let me know and we can look at purchasing extended licences from the stock image providers, which allow for more printed copies to be produced.
No. The licences granted by the stock image providers do not allow you to make merchandise using your book cover design. You are allowed to make promotional items (eg bookmarks) that are given away for free.
If this is an issue then let me know and we can look at purchasing extended licences from the stock image providers, which allow for merchandising.
The covers are sold as-seen. If you would like to make simple adjustments to the cover (eg altering a colour) then let me know and I will do my best to make that change for you.
More substantial alterations to the design will incur additional costs. Please let me know if you would like alterations made and I will give you a quote.
Yes, within reason. In most cases, alternative typefaces can be used so please let me know if you would like a different typeface. You can add a note to your order or email me at jon@jonstubbington.com.
In most cases, there is no additional charge to change the typeface.
I reserve the right to refuse requests to change the typeface if I feel it will radically alter the design or you request a typeface I do not have access to.
Each cover is created by me, either as a fully illustrated design or using licenced stock images (photos and/or illustrations) which I combine into a new design.
While my designs are unique, please remember that any stock photos or illustrations I have used will not be exclusive to me or to that cover design. This means that an individual stock image I have used when creating a design could also be used on other book covers.
The designs have not been created using a generative AI art programme and, to the best of my knowledge, do not contain any generative AI art elements.
